Paul sped down Main Street with the pack of deaders close behind. Daphne compared the roads around them with the map so they did not get lost, or worse, trapped in a dead end. Akiko and Toshii stared out the rear window, keeping an eye on the living dead.

Paul turned right at Cloud Street, the first one he came to, then left a few hundred feet later onto East Jackson Street, which passed through a residential neighborhood. As he made the second turn, he noticed the deaders had just entered Cloud Street. He gunned it, putting as much distance as possible between them and the pack.

“Tell me when you spot the deaders.”

Several seconds later, the pack emerged onto East Jackson Street, still chasing the Pilot.

“They’re behind us,” warned Akiko.

Paul passed two streets before swerving right onto Blue Ridge Avenue, then pushed his foot down on the accelerator.

Daphne switched her gaze between the map and the roads around her. “I sure hope you know what you’re doing.”

“Trust me.”

Two streets later, he swung right onto East Prospect, the tires screeching in protest.

“Any signs of them?”

Akiko shook her head. “I think we lost them.”

“Let’s make sure it stays that way.” Paul steered the Pilot left into another residential neighborhood.

“Take your next right onto Laurel Street. That’ll bring us out onto 340.”

Paul followed Daphne’s directions. A minute later, he turned left onto 340 and pumped his fist in the air. Daphne mumbled, “Thank God.”

The road was clear except for a few vehicles parked on the sides and a row of orange traffic cones long since shoved out of the way. A few hundred feet ahead of them, a sign sat on the right side of the road with a giant arrow pointing left that read Skyline Drive.

Daphne clasped Paul’s hand. “You did it.”
